Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue
Whenever a prominent honors show nears, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
