This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills through this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of aware of the poltergeist, and the entity appears protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage fully commits to his cult stardom via this meta comedy caper. Hired by government spies to gather intel on the potential kingpin, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. October 11th, prime time, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Taking place in 1978 Denver, multiple child abductions has rendered the local kids on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and locked up in a basement, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the non-functional line in the room continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor plays the venal Jim, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye set about capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, yet Chastain achieves to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, the Film4 channel
