India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Smog Post Diwali

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "critical" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Several parts of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy limit established by the WHO.

Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x higher than acceptable limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Changes

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous smog that engulfs the metropolis as winter begins.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city government appealed to the judicial authority to seek a modification of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Reality

Despite concerns of public health and environmental advocates, the court approved the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during designated time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several monitoring devices throughout the city showed contamination peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements observed during the festival in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Implications

The widespread use of fireworks during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing deteriorating air quality in Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Problem

The dangerously high concentrations of pollution in the city have remained as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Near Diwali, the levels of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to seventy percent above the most severe records ever recorded in China's capital, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Multiple Contamination Factors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in adjacent states of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous pollution that then gets trapped over the city as cooler air descends.

Medical and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous studies.

These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can result in cancer.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k premature deaths per year in Delhi.
