Historical racism is returning within UK politics, which makes people feel fearful, the Prime Minister warned, alerting that polarizing far-right political tactics are “dividing the nation”.

Tackling Racist Language and Harmful Politics

In conversation to doctor and media figure a well-known TV doctor, the prime minister accused Nigel Farage’s Reform UK of overseeing the revival to racist and divisive politics which many believed was resolved decades ago”.

During the discussion, broadcast on ITV’s Lorraine show this week, Starmer provided his strongest signal that the two-child benefit cap could be removed during the upcoming fiscal announcement in the coming weeks.

Promise to Combat Child Poverty

When questioned whether he planned to eliminate this restriction, which charities have said is a major cause of child poverty across Britain, the Prime Minister said: “I want to state unequivocally I am committed to reduce child poverty.”

He outlined steps the government has already launched such as no-cost school lunches, breakfast clubs, and child care support and emphasized: “Further action is necessary, and I pledge that I am dedicated on reducing childhood poverty.”

When pressed about if his comments indicated he would lift the two-child limit, he stated he “wouldn’t be telling you we are going to drive down poverty among children unless I was certain that measures will be introduced various actions to achieve this”.

Strong Signals from the Chancellor

Rachel Reeves, provided a similarly clear signal on Monday stating to BBC Radio 5 Live how ultimately, children must not be punished due to their family’s financial situation”.

Government officials are understood to be preparing to remove the cap completely, having originally looked at gradual removal for bigger households or richer ones. An economic thinktank has estimated the expense would be roughly £3.5 billion in the coming years.

Ideological Split and National Renewal

In the interview, Starmer said the ideological split currently in Britain existed between the government’s vision for renewal versus “the toxic division of Reform” and others on the right that are “splitting the UK”.

“Some of the rhetoric being used – racist rhetoric, polarizing language – which I believed was resolved decades ago has reemerged in political debate leaving people deeply afraid,” he stated.

“It is essential to oppose to that racism, that division, and we have to proudly say that British identity means showing empathy, is to be reasonable, entails tolerance and kindness, which we value deeply.”

Echoing Warnings from the Health Secretary

Starmer mirrored language used by the Health Secretary, who cautioned earlier this month that an “ugly” racism similar to the 1970s and 1980s was now worryingly commonplace again and that NHS staff were primary targets of this trend.

The health secretary said occurrences of both verbal and physical attacks based on people’s skin colour now happened so often that it was now “socially acceptable to be racist”.

“We’ve got to call time to discrimination in this country and we’ve got to put that ugly racist sentiment that has emerged nationally back in its box and reestablish a climate in this country where racism is unacceptable to hold racist views,” Streeting stated.

Defining Choice for Voters

Starmer used his speech at the Labour party conference in September to outline clear divisions with his political opponents, stating that voters faced a “defining choice”.

He said he was involved in a struggle for the nation’s identity, noting although voters had “reasonable” concerns regarding unauthorized immigration, there was “a moral line” that Farage and others had overstepped.

The PM vowed to confront anyone claiming that people who were not white were not truly British and that households who had lived in Britain for years must be removed, stating people promoting such views constituted “an enemy of national renewal”.

“Encouraging racist violence and hatred, that goes beyond concern: it’s criminal. This party – this great party – values national symbols, yet if they are painted with hateful messages, targeting a business owner to ‘go home’, that is not patriotism; that is pure discrimination,” he told activists.
