Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators

The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”

League Context for Owner Penalties

This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, possesses an approximate net worth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.

Offseason Issues and Public Spotlight

This event follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt key pass rusher Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in building the Dallas franchise into the world’s highest-worth sports franchise, even with its recent championship drought.

The league’s action to penalize Jones highlights its ongoing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or financial standing.
