The scientist and activist, a bioastronautics research scientist, was a passenger on the New Shepard NS-31 rocket in April 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She concluded that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also included experts in various fields.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
