The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
